Why does every producer in Hollywood, no matter how small they are, have an assistant that patches in their phone calls?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Beyond faking their assistant, many of them also hire "virtual assistants", which uses VOIP techology (like when you call Dell support and someone in India answers) to patch you to the assistant - who probably assists multiple people and is likely not even in the same state. Being a virtual assistant is such a common role that they've even formed their own non-profit, the IVAA (http://www.ivaa.org/)!

I do hope there aren't really people out there that actually fake their own assistant with a different voice. Anyway....

Everyone who can afford an assistant has one because they want to appear as large and professional as possible. If the producer is legitimately busy then having one makes sense as they can juggle multiple calls in quick succession by putting callers on hold. Also, if you have an in-office assistant, they can do other great things for you like typing and coffee runs.

They have to, for their image. Otherwise they seem small-time.

But listen closely... some of them are just using a fake voice for their "assistant".

Then they cover the phone with their hand and answer it again in their normal voice!
