Why does backing up my iPhone on iTunes take so long?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hey, Syncing time depends on your firmware and what is on your iPhone. If you have any version between 2.0 and 2.1, it will take a while, If you have a 1x version then some of them take a while. The more apps that you have, and the bigger they are the longer it takes to sync. If you have lots of contacts and bookmarks and other settings, it takes a while. If you are running the latest versions (2.2 and 2.2.1) it should be very quick (less then a minute). iPhone OS 3.0, the latest version is coming out very soon, if its not out already, so update to that, and if its not fixed, restore to that. If it still doesn't work, contact apple.

NOTE: I am just assuming iPhone OS 3.0, will be a quick backup. I can not verify, as I have not upgraded yet.

NOTE2: If your device is jailbrocken then it will take a little longer, but mine is 2.2.1 jailbreak and it is very quick.

App developers have the option to ask iTunes to backup any data the app requests. Developers should not ask iTunes to backup large amounts of data, but if they do, this will slow down the backup process.

It's possible you have a "bad app" that is asking iTunes to backup large amounts of data.

Additionally, make sure you are running the most recent iTunes and iPhone firmware version. There have been significant improvements in certain upgrades.
