Why does America, one called North and the other is South?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It is commonly taught and believed but is in dispute that the "Americas" both North and South are named after Amerigo Vespucci a European explorer of the "new world" in the late 1400s and early 1500s. Amerigo Vespucci sailed and explored under both the Spanish and Portuguese flags.

However that the Americas were actually named after Amerigo Vespucci has always been in dispute.

But whichever way the Americas got their name...
The distinction of "North" and "South" come from their location on the map of the world. North America is in the Northern Hemisphere and South America is in the Southern Hemisphere.(mostly) and south of North America.

Agree with you on most... but the issue it is far from being in dispute bud. There is not such thing as a dispute of which is to be named America. I'm also an American that happen to live in the south.

South America is the name of the place I live.

There are two continents; North and South America found in the Northern and southern Hemispheres respectively. Central America which is a long, tapering isthmus that forms a bridge between North and South America. Central America is considered to be part of North America.

They have been classified as two different continents and the names were given due to their position relative to the equator.
