Why does a biodegradable plastic for melt in warm food? Are there any that do not?

I was trying to be environmentally friendly by buying biodegradable plastic cutlery, and the fork melts in warm food. I normal plastic fork does not melt. Why does this happen, and is this bad to be eating off a form that melts?

If you do a google search for Ecopure or Eco-One you will find some landfill biodegradable additives that are used to make normal plastic biodegradable when sent to a landfill. These are relatively new products and are a significant break through for the controll of plastic waste. The plastic retains its original properties of thermal behaviour and mechanical strength. Ask the companies that make Ecopure or Eco-One and they will show you companies using their products who make plastic cutlery, plates etc that you can use and know when you toss then out to the landfill they will biodegrade away. Plus they can be recycled according to the original number of the plastic if you have recycle facilities available.

The cheapest substance for biodegradable plastics is lactic acid (derived from corn or other sugary vegetables), but the plastic that results becomes malleable (technically not melting) at 60C (140F), which is about the temperature of a steak done "medium", and a lot lower than the temperature of most "hot" foods. For example, most places serve coffee at around 180F.

Put one of these forks in a cup of hot water (not a biodegradable cup!) and gently push down on it; it will likely form a very funny shape!

There are biodegradable plastics that soften at higher temperatures, but they are more expensive and usually not cost effective.

Because some types of plastic are more heat resistant than others. The food is probably to hot. Some non-biodegrable plastic cutlery will melt at that temperature too. You need to get heat resistant biodegradable plastic cutlery.
It is not good to eat with melting cutlery. It will probably have a bad taste, and will affect the taste of the food. It might also become sticky. There is a strange kind of feeling when you are eating with a fork that is melting. When you are eating, the melting fork will have a sort of melted cheese texture in your mouth, and it becomes hard again in your mouth. You will probably be chewing the fork along with the food. You might ingest some of plastic too.
Heat resistant biodegradable cutlery are available at the following websites:

You can use wooden cutlery as an alternative.
