Why do you think the WA woman who claimed an unknown assailant threw acid in her face, lied, knowing it was a self inflicted injury?

Bethany Storro, who received public sympathy as well monetary contributions when she claimed to have been doused in the face with acid by an unknown African-American woman, has admitted to having thrown the acid on her own face and the entire incident was a hoax. No explanation has been offered for her deception yet. What do you think would provoke someone to do this?

Mental illness causes people to do stuff that doesn't make sense to the rest of us

Desperate need for attention (accent on 'desperate') brought on by severe mental problems.
It is unfortunate that she pulled a "Susan Smith" and putting the false blame on a Black person. You should have seen the comments from the droolers on every posting of this story. Now that the truth has come out, all the racists who were going "SEE?! SEE?! We TOLD you so!" are strangely quiet.
That aspect of her crime (and it IS a crime) was not helpful. It just served to whip up the Troglodytes into a mouth-foaming frenzy.

I won't get into the psycology of it all and just say she was a nut looking for attention. Who knows how lonely she was.

There are many wonderful sites that delve into the psycology of hurting oneself. Without knowing more about her life and family history I can only issue an educated guess.

This may be a deep depression combined with self loathing.

Self inflicted injury is a symptom of a deeper emotional problem a pain that is acted out. The goal may be a subconsious desire to get help. The fact that whe injured her face tells me she wanted people to see and understand her pain. The face is also what you are to other people, by destroying or attempting to destroy how she is identified she may be trying to start over.

It's hard to comprehend the desperation this woman felt when she inflicted this kind of injury on herself - I agree that it was a cry for attention. The real crime lies in the fact that she blamed this on a fictitious black woman. Was her claim racially motivated? Who knows! It is obvious that the woman is mentally ill, but I still believe she should be prosecuted and sentenced to do time in a mental institution. Sympathy is not what she deserves at this point - regardless of her mental state, she was well aware of her deception and the motive for her actions.
