Why do you suppose the movie The Road began after the disaster instead of before like most disaster movies?

I’ve watched a lot of apocalyptic movies and usually they start before the disaster happens. The Road begins after the disaster has happened and we don’t get to know how the world ended up coated in ashes. Why do you suppose this fact was left out? Are we supposed to just use our imaginations? If it truly was the apocalypse why are there still so many people alive? What do you think happened to the world?

It is not a film about a disaster. It is a film about humanity. You mention disaster movies, and those types of movies are about watching as things crumble and the heroes narrowly escape the devastation.

I think that The Road doesn't show you the event because it is a small movie that focuses on how people cope with what happened once some people managed to hang on.

The film is not about the disaster, it's about the road, the journey, and ultimately it's about humanity and each of our own journeys through life. We find out at the end that the film is not about the father's journey, but the boy's. Even though it seems everyone in the world, even his father, has turned against everyone else in their struggle for survival, the boy still has good in him. The fact that the story takes place after an apocalypse helps to show that the really important things are food, shelter, and how you treat other people.
