Why do you have to "put your two cents in"?

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Two cents are better than one, twice as much fun. But it makes sense to only use one and keep one in the piggy bank.

I know this isn't the origin of 'a penny for your thoughts', but my dad once told me what it came to mean. When the form of communication from a distance was letter writing, and a stamp cost a penny, people would often write to others for advice and include a penny with their letter - a penny for your thoughts!

Put my two cents in originates from the older "put my two bits in" and has its origin in the game of poker. When playing poker you have to make a small bet before the cards are dealt called an "ante" to begin play in that hand. This phrase draws an analogy to the poker ante (two bits) and gains your entry into the conversation. There - I put my two cents in!

Inflation! :)
The phrase "putting in my two pennies worth" comes from a British saying "putting in my tuppence worth" and it means that one's opinion is offered in a deprecating way, to offset the possibility of offending the other party. In other words, a very small offering, if you will, please.

It has nothing to do with "a penny for your thoughts."
