Why do we spend money on things we don't need even though we could have spent it on something else and perhaps saved a person's life?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This reminds me of a line from Amy Tan's Tedtalk:

"Save a man from drowning you are responsible to him for life"
(I linked the tedtalk as my source. It's at minute:second 9:10 on if you want to look at the context she was using it in.)

What you may believe to be a good act when you do it may have horrible repercussions in the future. This may scare people away from doing what they feel is "right" in a situation.

I believe you can reduce the chance of doing something with good intentions but horrible consequences by examining your real reasons for acting instead of saying something nonspecific like "because it's the 'right' thing to do."

Still, that only reduces the chance; it does not eliminate it.

Everyones perception of what "need or "want" means is different. I need a car. Thats true, now what I choose for a car is an example of the line I specificly will draw seperating need and want. 5 wheels, 2 doors, and a motor is my need but I want a BMW. I try to measure by what I see as reasonable and what I see as excessive but as long as I'm doing my part to help people I'm doing the best thing I could do, set an example.
I'll most likely get a Honda.

You're "need", can be actually be my/a "want". Case to case bases, really. We're humans, and it is in human nature to never be fully satisfied. Plus we are creatures of habit.
