Why do we need to be sad that Jesus suffered?

I am atheist, so perhaps I am biased.
But why are we supposed to be sad that Jesus died on cross for us? There have been other martyrs, heroes, innocents or not who died on cross or suffered many other forms of torture or death. Entire cities were decimated.
For example, the Roman general Crassus crucified thousands of men from Naples to Rome.
Thousands of rebels who fought for their just cause against slavery. And we are supposed to cry for one man?
Please explain, I do not understand.

I'm pretty sure that Jesus himself wouldn't want people to feel sad for him. Sadly it's the people who constructed/edited the bible in a way to have power over man that created the guilt.

Jesus was a mahatma (great soul), but his message has gotten so distorted by the use of guilt, scarcity, and violence.

He's not the only one though.

The fith Sikh Guru - Guru Arjan endured 5 nights and days of endless torture as a sacrifice to stand up to was what right.

""All is happening in accordance with waheguru's will. Men who stand for Truth have often to suffer. Their sufferings give strength to the cause of Truth. Go, brother. Pray for me. Pray for the success of my cause. Pray for victory to truth.""

Why do atheists ask religious questions? Will a proper answer actually change your mind about your beliefs? I guess it's possible.

Caring about one mans suffering doesn't exclude concern for all mans sufferings. When you read a book it's likely that you become engaged mentally and emotionally for the main characters. That doesn't mean you cease to care about other peoples plights today. Of course to me the Bible is more than just a good book, but I didn't ask the question so I'm including other answers in an effort to help you relate.

Your ability to show concern over anyone suffering is psychologically healthy. Your inability to do so could be categorized under the term "Alexithymia". Granted, that's an extreme example.

In the context of your question a good reason to be concerned specifically about the life and death of Jesus is because so many people around you are. If you don't take the time to understand you're deliberately overlooking a very large part of a major influence in the world. But by asking it would appear (if it's a sincere question and not rhetorical) that you are trying.

Whether you believe becomes less important in light of the fact that people that are influencing your life do (such as political leaders). But it's worth noting that Jesus and the Bible have been the center of things for many centuries and it's not slowing down.

If you were to read the Bible and see the accuracy of the predictions there, it is possible to at least acknowledge the possibility that that accuracy will also play out in future events. There's enough information contained in scripture to predict future events. Understanding the source of these predictions (your belief in them is not required) simply gives you another tool to make good decisions in what are for some, confusing times.

I think the most valuable contribution I can make to this discussion is that too many people talk about the Bible and it's contents that actually have no clue what is really there. People teach and preach what they call Biblical concepts but if you do even a little research it becomes obvious that the Bible was only used as the Title of their information and the Bible actually teaches something else.

Never take someones word for what is in the Bible. I don't care how many initials they have behind their name. "Experts" used to think the world was flat too. If you want to know answers about the Bible, read it for yourself. No one is asking you to believe it (in spite of the obvious benefits in doing so), just be knowledgeable about it if in fact you really want to know.

To the non-athiests out there, the reason to care about Jesus specifically is because understanding what happened to Him and why can save your life. Caring and believing in what is actually written in scripture will not make you a bad person, only following misinformed people's ideas of what is there can do that.

Ask a question about what's in the Bible and I'll show you examples of what the Bible says if you're having trouble finding it yourself. Don't believe in the Bible? Move on to more interesting topics. I bet there's a rousing discussion about Lord of the Rings, Obama or NASCAR to be found that is far more interesting. :)

I would ask questions to atheists if I found the belief system interesting, I guess. But I don't ask questions about Wrestling either.

you make some interesting points but you meander a lot; in fact I found the answer yesterday while reading a magazine

Meander. I love that word. It rolls off the tongue in a fun way, doesn't it?

I agree, I meander.

Glad you found what you were looking for. Care to share your conclusions with the class?
