Why do people use Facebook and similar sites to discuss personnel information and air dirty laundry and resentments?

Tip for best answer: M$1.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Sometimes people feel narcissitic, like their viewpoints are important to others or at least entertaining.

Other times, they are looking for empathy or sympathy.

On occasion they are using the share as a form of cheap self-therapy without regard to possible consequence. After all, finding their personal ramblings might possibly be like the proverbial needle in the haystack if one considers the expanse of the internet.

Perhaps the main reason is that the internet has become a surrogate for real relationships. Tweeting has become the 21st century equivelent to standing at the fenceline and gossiping.

Internet rage, like road rage, makes people feel safe behind the screen. People say and do things online they'd never do in front of a physical audience.

If they air out their feelings by typing them it allows them to see things more clearly and objectively. Typing their thoughts out is a form of venting and dealing with what is bothering them so they can take appropriate action and/or avoid inappropriate action in the situation.

Facebook and other social networking sites are considered a "free publicity" option for those who want to show off, or inform others of their whereabouts. From the food they are eating to the mundane things they do everyday. But on the other side I think there are those who are discrete enough just place things which they think are just appropriate so as not to lose their privacy. I think that for those who frequently logged in and post comments are looking for social interaction that they cannot get at home because they have their own work to attend to and they cannot find the time to visit friends or hang out with them. So the next most convenient thing would be Facebook for they can pour out their thoughts and feelings in this type of media.

Actually in my own opinion human as we are we are basically a social animal. That's why many social networking sites are thriving today. I must admit I am a member of a number of social networking site. For I want to keep touch with my friends old and new and my relatives who lives far from us.

As much as possible I don't want to make Facebook or any other social networking site a negative source of information. Posting useless information and irrelevant videos or photos is not my cup of tea.

For two reason:

1) people feel braver behind their computer screens and feel rules of any sort don't apply
2) those who have graduated from high school, that were in the popular clan can never reach that peak again, so they are trying to reach it in the after high school life... the social sites that many people reunite with their old high school friends and enemies.
