Why do people say communism or socialism when they mean totalitarianism?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Having never experienced any of them, they cannot tell the difference. Americans are very, very fortunate to live in a country that has always been a democracy. Most countries have changed their style of government as a pendulum swings back and forth. Our democracy is flawed, certainly; any system of government involving humans will be flawed. However, look at Russia. Because the Russian people have truly never been free (with the exception of a few months in 1917 and after 1991), the concept of democracy is very difficult to implement.
