If sex was merely a means of reproduction and nothing else, then people would only copulate during one to five time periods in their lives--many people, perhaps, never at all. The big draw for sexual intercourse is the pleasure sensations.

Remember that most of the sexual pleasure experience takes place in the brain, where a number of hormones and chemicals are released to create a euphoric sensation. To quote one article:

"Initially, when we begin to feel an attraction towards someone of the opposite sex, our heart rate increases and blood levels of adrenaline and the 'stress hormone' known as cortisol rise accordingly. This is then followed by the release of dopamine and serotonin, neurotransmitters that induce an intense rush of pleasure, similar to the stimulatory effects of cocaine and amphetamine."

Now imagine what your brain can do as the result of sexual intercourse and orgasm!

Now, for women, often more than men, sexual intercourse is also an expression of intimacy and love. The bonds of a relationship feel solidified through sexual experiences (even if it isn't really true).

So what does this all mean? Even if sexual intercourse played no role in reproduction, more than likely it would scarcely be less popular...just perhaps a little less risky.

People love sex because it feels good. It is human nature. There is very little about sex that has to do with reproduction. Procreation is a beautiful, wonderful benefit of having sex with a partner that you love and intend to be with-ideally for the rest of your life. If we reproduced every time that we had sex, the world would be immensely over-populated, and we would all be starving and broke.

Children are wonderful, but sex is intended for so much more. Aside from feeling good, it prompts the release of oxytocin, which is necessary for proper hormone regulation. In turn, sexual activity helps us manage stress, feel confident about ourselves, and maintain healthier relationships with others.

Most doctors and sex education/ human sexuality instructors agree that people enjoy sex simply because it feels good. There are some exercise/ health benefits to having sex. Children, even at the age of 2 or 3 may masturbate to receive the same gratification.

There are those who may be a bit extreme and participate in sex as a means of reproduction.
