Why do people go to New York City to become a writer?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It's probably because there are many big publishing houses located in New York City, as well as agents are here, and newspapers. There is so much opportunity in New York City being that it's a big city with a lot of stuff happening, which means there is certainly more to write about. Also, New York City is a fun city to live in, a city that doesn't sleep!

Although an aspiring writer would not be able to afford to live there, it's incredible how many notable literary names have spent time living in New York City. For an aspiring writer in a small town somewhere, there is an irresistible draw to walk in the footsteps of the greats. And New York is the place where those footsteps are concentrated.

So many of the great stories are set in New York! And what better way to find inspiration than to look at, and imagine you're feeling what, your heroes looked ad and felt.

NYC's concentration of publishing houses has always been a draw for editors, agents and publicists. This is where the hype happens. But that has little to do with real writers. One could always mail a manuscript, or come here for a week to knock on doors. It's the atmosphere of inspiration that draws creative people here, be they writers, performers or artists.

Having lived in New York for years, I treasure Alicia Keys' new song, "Empire State" - it portrays this crazy city with a breathless affection of what it used to feel like to visit here, reminding me of the romance of New York. It feels timeless - and just think about how many people you've ever heard described as "modern writers" to realize that writers, by and large, are timeless folk.

New York is where you come to FEEL like a writer.

Cheers,

Ray

NY used to be the hub of all publishing but that has changed with the world wide web. Publishers can be found around the world and writers no longer need to travel far to find one. NY is still a place of great opportunity but just not the only one any more.

Maybe the cachet. It is New York after all. Maybe writers gravitate to New York after they decide to write. Personally, I prefer Maui. And I especially prefer it about January 15.
