Why do people act like breaking news is the Second Coming when we all know it won't matter 2 days later?

Do people just want to be informed so others don't appear to know more than they do? Seriously, think of all the news stories that were "breaking news" this past year that didn't matter a few days later. I'm having a hard time thinking of any examples (see my point).

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

I think it is the "You heard it first" syndrome. We all want to be the first to know all the whos, whats, whens, wheres, whys, and hows so we can say "Yup I heard it first" and every single information outlet would do just about anything to be the answer to the next obvious question "Where did you hear that from?"

So every piece of tidbit to tower sized item of information that is new is called "Breaking News" to indicate that the particular info outlet with the "Breaking News" is the answer to that question and we all flock to the words "Breaking News" because once we have that info we have the new.. we are the ones with the cutting edge information.

The satisfying exhale of information is what we seek.
We know this fury and fever will subside but are not really concerned because we are sure 100% the next hit of glassy eyed "Breaking News" is right around the corner and regardless of the content and context we will seek to be the one who can say "I heard it first".. that is the biggest prize in information absorption and the biggest prize in journalism is to be where that information came from.

So it's ego based for the individual, and profit based for the news outlet.

I tried being a news junkie, but it was just so vapid and meaningless. So I became a knowledge junkie again, and a wisdom junkie until I realized that being a junkie of any kind was contrary to any semblance of wisdom and then I realized *sigh* that you can't really seek wisdom actively...

Eh, hard to say. I could defiantly see that as possible. When MJ died I remember being in the airport waiting for my boyfriends plane to land, and there were about 10 different people on their cellphones going "Oh My God! did you hear that MJ Died??".

Best topic, what's going on in the world.

And it's also the fact it's so addicting. I mean really, the news and media is only popular because they put the fear of god into you. I can honestly say I'm addicted to CNN because of that, even knowing what they're doing. I want to know what's going on in the world and my Country. I want to know about the horrible things that happen, I want to know about all the political things that are occuring. Just everything, even knowing what they do and knowing that ya'know they won't report every bad thing, cause realisticly they're goverment ran. I'unno It's a hard thing to answer.

Man, I'm really off on my "answering" today. lol bless. sorry if that made no sense.

I disagree with you saying that it won't matter 2 days later, look at the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Peru.

People like to find out things as they happen. People are going to read what they see first, and getting read means getting revenue. If something is old, then it isn't "news".

@csmagor... news about serious issues like earthquakes amounts to a small percentage of what stories get presented as "breaking news" by major news sources. here's an example of something once presented as "breaking news" by the Associated Press:

I agree that the earthquakes are an exception, especially how they appear to be forming a trend.

True, things like that stay in news for quite awhile. But things like that only happen once in awhile.

And @ justin_time

They really aren't becoming a trend. 2 bad earthquakes. Haiti and Chile, it's a terrifying sad thing. Now they're reporting every bloody one. Like the one in Hawaii... No one realizes that earthquakes happen EVERY day. Just like the one in Hawaii. Media feeds off fear, infact I saw 2 articles about tornados on CNN the other day. I would bet the only reason they're posting it, is because of the natural disasters that have recently happened in Haiti and Chile. Tis a sad thing.

With the combining of media with technology, has come what is called the 24 hour news cycle. Media outlets play to the tastes of the media consumer and breaking news a) piques initial interest and b) keeps the interest to the same outlet. Now, if the outlet can keep the consumer's interest through the various advertising blips, then the reporting of that information has served its purpose. The technology comes in at the point that the consumer can get the information at any time in any place they want and is willing to suffer through a commercial to get it.

Hope that helps,
Cheers!

Even if something's normal, stating it as thus does not account for its reason for being so prevalent (what you call "normal").
