Why do owners of horses put a blind fold type thing over the horses eyes?

I was driving down the road this morning and I saw a horse with a fastened blind fold type device that is cloth over the horses eyes. I know it is for the better of the horse but what is it for and what is this thing called? I'm thinking maybe an eye infection..........

That thing you saw covering the horse's eyes was most likely a fly mask. If you looked closer, you probably would have noticed that the cloth was really a mesh, allowing the horse to see. It's the summertime and that means many insects are about, especially in fields. Insects love the fluid that a horse's eye produces, and they fill convene around the horse's eyes, causing it discomfort. The fly mask keeps them off.

What you saw was probaly a fly mask.It is made out of a mesh material that allows the horse to see through it.Flies like to crawl around on horses eyes.These are used when there is an eye infection,recent surgery or that particular horse is annoyed with the flies...constant shaking of the head.

It's not a blindfold, but rather a fly mask. It's see through, and like mesh similar to the screen on your door. It's used to prevent the flies from bothering the horse's face. They also make fly sheets, and fly boots for the same purpose. They can also be used for horses with sensitivity to the sun, and I know for my old horse we used fly masks, boots, and sheets because he would break out in hives to the gnats and flies.
