I'm opting for the truth. Men are sexual creatures, or pigs, depending on how you want to look at it.
If you're some dude with a beer gut and a hundred bucks in the bank, you're just happy that someone has deigned to date you.
When that guy wins the lottery, loses the beer gut, and now buys silk suits from a high end tailor then suddenly the amount of women who will date him is more broad, and if he is unsatisfied with his current partner he'll "trade up," as you put it.
To look at it with a crewed analogy, its the difference between being forced to drive a pickup truck and then being offered a BMW.
I don't say that this choice is right or ethical, but this is why it happens. Its a broadening of ones options.
