Holidays are a time to celebrate and part of that is to have a feeling of plenty. In addition, most people have guests for dinner, so they make a wider variety of foods to make sure everyone has food they like. Finally, because most people are not used to making meals for large parties of guests as a regular thing, their assessment of how much food is needed is not as accurate as when they make a meal for a smaller party.
