Why do I have a persistent cough?

How can I get rid of a persistent cough? Do I need to see my doctor if my cough is persistent? Is there a holistic cure for persistent cough? How can I prevent a persistent cough?

Hello there @renaldob! Cough can be cause by cold or flu but there are many cause of persistent cough. Possible causes of persistent cough in children are asthma, bronchiectasis, and even cystic fibrosis. Some of these conditions mentioned are due to viral infections which cause recurrent and persistent cough.

Persistent cough could be caused by any of the following:
*chronic bronchitis
*Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
*smoker's cough
*GERD
*postnasal drip
*asthma
*allergies
*habitual coughing

If a person is asthmatic, suffers from allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, GERD and enlarged adenoids are all possible causes with chronic cough. One possible cause also could be cancer or tuberculosis.

I think it would be best for you to consult your doctor if you are suffering from persistent cough. Your doctor will be able to do a thorough examination and order different tests so that you will be diagnosed properly and once diagnosis will be given, he will be able to prescribe appropriate medicines so that you will completely recover.

Yes there are some alternative and natural remedies for cough.
These are:
1. Drink hot carrot juice for this will relieve cough and improve your health.
2. Take a few drops of essential oil of juniper with hot water as inhalant.
3. Cut one lemon with black pepper powder and salt and suck it to reduce cough intensity. This makes a good cough treatment.
4. Eat grapes every day for they will help tone up the lungs and act as expectorant as well.
5. Get 1-2 grams powder of black pepper, long pepper and dry ginger in equal proportions and make a mixture. Take this mixture with honey 2-3 times a day.
6. Take also honey with grape juice is also beneficial for cough.
7. Chew holy basil and 4 black peppers to prevent cough and other respiratory ailments.

To prevent cough:
1. Eat a well-balanced diet
2. Minimize eating chilled products like ice cream and softdrinks
3. Avoid allergens like dust, smoke, fumes and gases.
4. Take a daily teaspoon of honey everyday
5.Quit smoking if you do smoke
6. Avoid consuming alcohol
7. Don't go to crowded places for they are usually source of virus
