Why do I gain weight for a few days after I exercise?

I noticed if I do a really rigorous work-out for a few days after I weigh more than I did when I started, and then suddenly lose a little more than I had gained. Granted it's within lbs like say gain a pound lose 3, but I thought it was odd and wondered why it happened.

It depends. Do you workout regularly? The reason I ask is when you first start working out, your body will adapt by storing more glycogen in muscles to use for energy to power the workouts. Each molecule of glycogen is stored in muscle tissue with approximately 3-4 molecules of water. If you workout consistently and virgorously, 3-6/ week, that glycogen and water stays. It's not body fat, so it's nothing to be concerned about. You will find that if you normal don't workout very hard, if you workout harder for several days, you might gain a couple of pounds - in the form of glycogen and water.

Additionally, this glycogen and water is often the first thing to go on a low-carb diet. Thie phenomenon is also the reason why people sometimes describe feeling weaker during workouts if they're severely restricting carbs. The body doesn't receive enough carbohydrate to fuel muscles, so first it uses up all the stored glycogen (which goes with the water) and then initiates a ketogenic process to turn fatty acids into a glycogen-like substance. At this point, you get bad breath (from acetone created during ketosis) and a little brain dullness - as the ketones the liver creates for the brain to use as fuel aren't the same as glycogen. That's why people who go on a low-carb diet lose 10 pounds in a week - it's pretty much entirely water and glycogen.

Also, some people are just more prone to water retention than others (which might not have anything to do with glycogen). Edema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid beneath the skin. When it's hot and I exercise outside, I get some edema in my hands (as do all the women in my family - and I have since I was 9). Edema can be caused by high blood pressure, poor functioning of the process that pulls water into the circulatory system, inflammation, or impaired lymph system function. Even minor impairments can cause some water retention.

Diet and exercise is very important in losing weight, and in order to achieve the goal your aiming for, you need dedication and self discipline. Don't worry about gaining few pounds dear, just continue your weight loss routine program and you'll see the effect.

This is an educated guess, LOL and you are making me feel guilty because I can't remember the last time I did a workout like that!

I have read and heard a few times, that muscle weighs more than fat, so if you have really done well and burned up some fat, converting it into muscle, that could account for the weight gain. Also, the fat burning effect lasts after the workout is finished, maybe that is why you get the yo-yo result.

The only other possibility that occurs to me is that you are almost sure to become more thirsty when doing strenuous exercise, you drink more than usual and the extra fluid would the take a while to leave your system.

It's probably best to stick to water or low calorie drinks, then you won't undo all the good you've done.
