Why do I feel more tired when I wake up after sleeping for 12 hours as opposed to when I sleep for only 8 hours at night?
I always wonder why this is the case for me. Is it common for other people as well to be more tired after a longer night of sleep? One would think that the more rest you get, the more awake and energetic one would be during the daytime. I would like to know what makes a certain amount of sleep per night the "right" amount. Does it depend on what sort of physical activity you put forth the day before? Does this phenomenon have to do with the REM cycle? Have you found in your personal experience that less sleep is better? Or are you content with a 12-hour sleep schedule? Does sleeping too much contribute to depression? Is that why I feel more tired? Fill me in on any studies or reports that have been done.

Too much sleep is bad for health. According to researchers, more than 8 hours sleep each night is bad for you. We have all known that too little sleep is bad for you. The optimal amount of sleep is not a meaningful concept unless the timing of that sleep is seen in relation to an individual's circadian rhythms. A person's major sleep episode is relatively inefficient and inadequate when it occurs at the "wrong" time of day; one should be asleep at least six hours before the lowest body temperature. Human sleep need can vary by age and among individuals, and sleep is considered to be adequate when there is no daytime sleepiness or dysfunction. Too much sleep causes many hazards including depression, lethargy, idleness, etc.
Adults need at least eight hours of sleep a night for good health. Infants typically sleep at least 16 hours a day. Most preschoolers need at least 11 hours of sleep a night, and most school-age children need at least 10 hours sleep. NASA recommendations that astronauts sleep 8 hours a day when in space.
