There are different styles of driving gloves. Some driving gloves have an open back for ventilation, which helps keep your hands cooler during warm-weather driving. It's also just a "style thing." Others have a more closed back, so those keep your hands warmer during winter driving.

Here's a pair of driving gloves that don't have the openings in the back: http://www.amazon.com/Carhartt-Insulated-Leather-Driver-Glove/dp/B002AGDO4G/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1296487134&sr=8-15

Many driving gloves have knuckle holes as well as open backs, but the characteristic that's common among driving gloves is that it can be closed around the wrist are closed with Velcro or the more traditional snap.

Open back for ventilation, closed for warmth. Any gloves can be called driving gloves, but most high end drivers gloves appear to be the same. There must be a reason for that opening.

The knuckle holes look like they let the skins stretch and fit tighter, with less stress on the glove. The snap is for sure. for proper fit around the wrist.

Driving gloves are often used by intense or focused drivers or when driving an older vehicle with poor materials on the steering wheel (such as hard plastic or metal).

Because the hands are one of the most common areas on the body for producing sweat, driving gloves ensure that the moisture doesn't affect steering. The open back of the driving gloves provides some form of ventilation without sacrificing the most important function of the glove: grip.

Chauffeur's use driving gloves as a statement of luxury, but their use also enables them to have full control over the vehicle, providing a top class ride for their passengers.

Mostly for comfort.
Like gloves for cyclist, golfers, and many other sports where a better grip is essential, the open back and perforated fingers allow cooling.
It also allows the glove to fit tighter, which is important for the particular activity.
