Whiskers are like our eyelashes in that when something gets near our eyes, our lashes send a message to the brain and we automatically close our eyes. Like cat's whiskers, dog whiskers will send a message to the brain when the whiskers come into contact with an object. Unlike a cat, however, the dog's whiskers do not seem to be used to sense the size of an opening for passing through. This is why dog's whiskers do not grow to a length that is equal to the width of their bodies, but a cat's do. Some dogs do not even have whiskers; they are breeds known for an extremely keen sense of smell and eyesight.
