There are multiple reasons why cats groom themselves. It is believed that the number one reason they do it is to regulate body temperature. If they get to hot, they can lick themselves to cool off. In winter, it puffs up there fur so air can get under and act as insulation and keep them warm. They also groom themselves to be clean (obviously, heh), and it keeps their coat waterproofed.
