Why didn't David Bowie perform Major Tom?
Please correct me if I am wrong, because there is a LOT of misleading information about this on the internet.
It is my understand that David Bowie wrote and sung 'Space Oddity'. Which was inspired by a play 'Space Odyssey' and it's confusing because 'Space Oddity' is plaster allover the net as odyssey.
Okay, then Peter Schilling comes along and does 'Major Tom', written by Bowie. Which most people think 'Major Tom' is 'Ground control to Major Tom, but it's not.
Is this correct? Why so much confusion over this? Why did Bowie not perform 'Major Tom'?

Bowie did "Space Oddity." Says last.fm:
“Space Oddity” is a song written and performed by David Bowie and released as a single in 1969. It is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who becomes depressed during an outer-space mission. Supposedly released to coincide with the Apollo 11 moon landing, it appears on the album Space Oddity. The BBC featured the song in its television coverage of the lunar landing
Schilling took the Major Tom character and used it in 1984, and the lyrics contain some of Bowie's, it sounds like. "He released an album in 1983 called, Error In the System, and from it came his only international hit single, which was called, Major Tom Coming Home. The song was a recoup of the David Bowie’s classic 1969 song called, Space Oddity. The original song was recorded in German but the hit version was done in English.
"Major Tom was a fictional astronaut which was created by David Bowie. Major Tom appears in the songs, Schilling, Mrs. Major Tom, by K. I. A., and it is believed that Elton John’s, Rocket Man, may also be about Major Tom. Bowie had Major Tom in his release called, Ashes To Ashes, and Space Oddity. Then there was Peter’s version called, Major Tom Coming Home. "
