Why did the Oceanic 6 lie about 8 people surviving the crash and who/what were their roles?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

They said they were 8 because the story would be more convincing if some of the survivors died on the island. The 3 survivors were dead anyway, so you have 3 lies less that you have to remember in front of the press. Charlie and Boone managed to transmit distress signals via radio, so if anybody found out about this, the story would still hold. And Hurley's sadness is justified by Libby's death (Hurley is really bad at lying and that covers-it up), so there you go.

Jack explained this at the very beginning of the Season 5, Episode 2. Spoiler Alert, but here is two minutes of that footage.

They lied saying they were the only people (the 6 of them) who survived the crash.  They did this because they did not want Charles Whitmore to find the island.  It was to "protect" the island and their friends who were on the island because Charles Whitemore sent all those people to kill them.

They sent those people after Benjamin Linus, the remaining survivors of oceanic 815 being only collateral damage.
