The first opium war started because the British were making a fortune selling it and the Chinese official Lin Tse-hsü, Imperial Commissioner of Canto, was shutting down the stores of opium and getting rid of corrupt Chinese officials. At the time (1839), opium was illegal in Britain, but they continued to trade in it with sales to other countries. Lin reasoned that since Britain had outlawed it, they should not be selling it. Lin threatened cutting off trade all together and expelling of British officials.
The war started in November of 1839 and did not end until 1842. The out-dated junks and military technology of the Chinese were no match against the British fighting ships and their land army.
