Santa moved to the North Pole in 1866. He did not publicly announce why, but he founded Santa Clauseville there. As the North Pole is in the American West, although rather more north, it may have been Manifest Destiny. Another consideration may have been that he acquired a team of reindeer during the 1820's and he may have wanted them to be comfortable year round.
