Germany was in the middle of a horrible recession. He was voted into power becuase he promised to get the country out of it's financial troubles. Germany was also still insulted at it's loss in WWI and Hitler started making speeches about how great Germany was and how he would make the world apologise for thier transgressions against Germany.

He eventually abolished the role of the President and made the Army swear obedience to himself. At this point, he was the head of the State, head of the Armed Forces and head of the biggest political party.

Read the story below, it's several pages long and covers his rise to power year by year.

Fear - Fear of a race being eliminated . hence to safe guard the race people got united under such ultra leaders.

Fanatics - They have superiority complex think that they are born to rule and are of superior nature . These fanatics were encouraged an made followers .

Failed System: When the existing rulers ( at that time ) or government fail to listen to popular voice then it gives a chance for leaders like Hitler to become popular and have a mass following .

From what I have read (which is quite a lot!), a number of factors were at play:

- Horrible economic chaos. People would support anyone that seemed to offer a way out. And also they were ready to blame any scapegoat for their problems.

- Deep divisions and the fear of a communist revolution. There was a lot of conflict on the streets between the far right and the far left.

- Anti-semitism was common. Just how far he would go was maybe not apparent to many Germans, and what was apparent was in keeping with how many people felt

- For a while he seemed to be successful. The economy stabilised, and Germans were proud to rebuild their army and reverse some of the humiliation they felt after World War One.

He had a charismatic personality, he could make people believe in his cause, even though they may not normally believe such a thing, much like cult leaders of today!

Because he was an gifted orator who, with Goebbels, effectively used the german people's anger, emerging technology, and his own natural charisma to build a personality cult. To gain a real understanding of why germany was so captivated with him you need to read about Joseph Goebbels, Heinrich Himmler, and Hermann Goring.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
--Joseph Goebbels

I think some people follow Hitler because their parents followed Hitler. It is like a family tradition.

Hmm, i think i get what this person is saying. I think they mean that There parents did it, so they did it too, like Teenages and children who looked up to their parents, even thought they never got a chance to grow up, they too technically followed.

Most people were kept in the dark about the horrific practices of the Nazi's. The German citizens did not know, but slowly grew to have suspicions. The Allied forces did not know at all until the Americans ran across the first concentration camp. They had no idea what it was when they first saw it. In the beginning, Hitler was very well-liked. He slowly and quietly gained more and more power until he was able to legislate himself to full power. The citizens of Germany were fed propaganda about the concentration camps. They were called work camps and were supposedly for people of Jewish faith to go and live and work happily with their own kind. The camps were made out to be as nice if not better than the world outside the camps and the commercials for the camps showed children happy and playing, cute little houses with flower beds out front, etc., a sort of "Utopia" Hitler was setting up just for the Jewish people to enjoy. Of course this was all one big euphamism. We all know the truth about what Hitler did. The citizens were kept in the dark. The Nazi soldiers who did know about what was goign on were either bigots themselves or so brainwashed by the Germany military (such is the case with many militaries; soldiers are brainwashed to follow orders regardless of their own feelings about a situation) that they blindly followed orders with a "just doing my duty" kind of attitude.

Finally, word started getting out and even some of those citizens who were prejudice against the Jewish people started to oppose Hitler, but by that time it was too late because he had written himself into the German legislation as having absolute power. However, there were a few top people in Hitler's army who secretly got together and plotted to assassinate him. If you haven't watched the movie "Valkyrie" or "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," I suggest you do. Both those movies cover very accurately the overall mentality of Nazi Germany during Hitler's reign. Valkyrie is about the plan to assassinate Hitler. Unfortunately, they failed and were executed themselves. Nonetheless, those two movies will give you the answer to your question and then some.

Fear. When he had the power he wanted and needed, he had the ability to instill fear. If you did not follow him, you would be punished/killed.

Hitler promised the utopia on earth that everyone hopes for. The general concepts of national socialism are in line with fascism, which is the religion of the state. A true fascist believes that the answers to all our problems lie in government, and that if government controls all aspects of our lives (education, economics, religion, health, diet, security, etc.), then we can have a utopia. We let the scientists and doctors determine what is good/bad for people, and let government enforce the good of people on them. And since the government is acting for its people's good, it is considered more democratic than democracy itself. To get things done, you just need to keep people in a state of crisis: "We can't debate. It's a crisis! Make the decision now!!"

Hitler came at a time when people were looking for a leader to rise up and fix all their problems. Unfortunately, as Ronald Reagan put it, "Government is the problem, not the answer." People crave liberty and utopia, but these two things cannot co-exist in government. Either you have the chance to make silly, bizarre, and even self-harming choices, or you are told what is good for you and forced to do it. If you want liberty, then when your choices lead to bad results, you have to fix your own problems. Otherwise, government will make sure you can't make bad choices.

I think he mesmerized people. He was a cult leader without actually having a place like Jonestown to keep his followers together. In desperate times people will listen to a smooth talker to help them out whether it's right or wrong.

People want something to believe in, something bigger than themselves. God is powerful but Hitler was right there. With smooth talking and powerful ideas, people were swept in. They were very swept in. Once you start to use power for evil even when following someone it's very hard to stop. It's like killing someone. It's a horrible thing, but if you killed 20 people, you wouldn't feel how bad it really was anymore. People following someone can convince you of almost anything. that is why it's important to be yourself and have your own will power. There may not be a hitler right now, but there are smaller instances of hitler all around us. There a million of instances where we follow other people just because others are. That we conform to bad things without thinking.

http://library.flawlesslogic.com/hitler_4.jpg

But as this article says. Hitler never said or did anything at the time to get people to follow him that past world leaders hadn't done. Therefore, it was more the way that he talked and what people yearned to believed at the time. If Hitler was going to jump off a bridge would you to? Many people did.
