Why did "Motherhood" (starring Uma Thurman) do so badly? Are people just not interested in movies about lives that mirror their own?

It sounds like it was really badly promoted. I've never even heard of the movie. The idea to make it so exclusive that only one theater is playing it also seems to have been a fatal mistake.
I read a synopsis, and the movie does sound boring, but worse movies have done better at the box office. Uma Thurman's name alone should have generated more buzz. It just seems like the ad budget for this movie was $0, and the promoter had no idea what he was doing.
I don't think we inherently shy away from movies that reflect real life, but we want those movies to bring something new or worthwhile to the table: beauty, humor, a new perspective, etc. In order to make a good movie about an average person, you need to reach out and touch the audience in a moving way. Sounds like this movie failed to do that.
