Why did Mike Portnoy leave Dream Theater?
Recently after a 25 year run with band he helped create Mike Portnoy announced he was leaving the band. I
would like to know the details! Any takers?

There seems to have been a little bit of tension building up between Mike Portnoy and the rest of the band over the last few years because of time issues. Although all of the musicians have had solo projects, side bands, etc. Portnoy is a work-a-holic that never seems to have any down time. In the last year or so he has been involved with:
Recordings:
Dream Theater - Black Clouds and Silver Linings
Transatlantic - The Whirlwind
God of War III soundtrack. "Raw Dog"
Transatlantic - Whirld Tour 2010: Live in London
Avenged Sevenfold Nightmare
Videos:
Black Clouds & Silver Drumming
Whirlwind Drumming
Tours:
Black Clouds & Silver Linings World Tour (Progressive Nation)
Iron Maiden Tour (opening act, summer 2010)
Transatlantic Whirlwind Tour (April and May 2010)
Avenged Sevenfold World Tour (through May 2011)
Beyond this, Mike was responsible for all aspects of the Dream Theater fan club, website, and a good portion of the day to day operations of the band.
So, back to the question, apparently Portnoy asked that Dream Theater not rush back into the studio in early 2011 but instead take a (for him) much needed break. The band said no, so he quit.
Justified? I am not sure how to take it as Mike Portnoy obviously over extends himself and if you look at it from the bands perspective, he was being selfish. I think for all Dream Theater fans, we will desperately miss his contributions to the amazing sound that they have built over the years.
