Why did David Letterman apologize to Farah Fawcett after the Joaquin Phoenix interview?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

He once called her the craziest guest he had ever had on his show after she acted somewhat bizarre during an interview (she later blamed it on medications she was taking.)

Because before JP's interview, the worst experience Dave had in interviewing a guest was FF . Now, with JP, I am amazed at the number of people coming to his defense, others condemning him or trying to do armchair psycho-analysis. (Good luck on that!) Then there is the possibility that his appearance was a hoax. The problem is, I think the description of this as a "hoax" goes too far, and that is why he can plausibly deny it. Instead, think of it as performance art in response to the many meltdowns we witness in the entertainment business. If it's performance art, it isn't a hoax exactly. I don't know for certain that this is the case, mere speculation on my part, but if it is and IF he plays this through without going too far, this could be a remarkable social experiment/artistic statement. It also has every chance of being a disaster and blowing up in his face. Then again, who knows. Look at how his brother's life ended. Let's hope his closest friends know the truth.

"We owe an apology to Farrah Fawcett," Letterman quipped, in response to the "Charlie's Angels" star's 1997 appearance on the program which was so awkward in which audiences speculated she was high on drugs.
