Well CBS thought it might work out, for starters, but check out this interesting back and forth that I found, starting with Drew Carey on Letterman and ending wiht Bob Barker's approval:

Considering that one of the rumors was Rosie O'Donnell, and considering the first quarter figures were down only about 13-15% (compare Conan losing 50% of Lenos audience), I'd say we could have done worse.
