Why Chopsticks?

Please explain the origin of chosticks - why were they used instead of forks and knives? Necessity and lack of resources?

It's just the way their society evolved - why do we use forks and spoons and not chopsticks? They're actually quite efficient for grasping noodles, meat and other objects, and for finer things like rice, one can "scoop" them up by spacing the chopsticks slightly apart (this works best with sticky rice, but I've mastered it with fried rice as well!). I think chopsticks take about as long to learn as a fork (think how long it takes for a child to finally elegantly hold a fork), they're just different ways of eating - one picks up food, and one spears food.

As for the history of chopsticks, there's a good article here: http://www.asianartmall.com/chopstickshistory.htm

Yep, there is nothing magical about knives and forks that all societies should use them.

Forks only in fact started being used quite recently in the West.

Apart from knives and forks and chopsticks, there are cultures that eat their food in other ways such as using tortillas or rotis to scoop up pieces of food.

... and they can save some cabinet space too. How much room does a set of forks, knives, and spoons take up anyways? The only universal eating utensil that modern civilization has come up with is the spork and those are about as useful as a car with no wheels. I for one think chopsticks are the way to go. If not you can just pick up on the Indian tradition and start using your hands. You can keep with the bulky utensils of modern man too. Really, I guess it's your call. :)

There is an excellent article on the history of chop sticks at http://asiancuisine.suite101.com/article.cfm/asian_culture_and_the_use_of_chopsticks which states among other things the following reasons for use of chopsticks:

- In ancient China, where chopsticks were developed, food was prepared in large pots, where it stayed hot for extended periods of time, so Chinese people would break off some twigs to pull out pieces of food.
- Due to Confucius' statements about knives being related to the aggressiveness of the slaughter house (Confucius was vegetarian) use of knives at the table was considered bad form.
- With dwindling food resources, meat was chopped into smaller pieces, which also cooked more rapidly thereby reducing the amount of fuel needed for cooking. These pieces were easy to pick up with chopsticks and did not require a fork and knife, which would have been needed to cut large chunks of meat into manageable bite-sized chunks.

A lot of debate has been put into the question are chopsticks the best utensils? To start with there are 3 ways of eating that are used around the world. Eating with ones hands, cutlery, and chopstick eating. There has been a lot of controversy put into which method of eating is the most hygienic. The western knife, fork and spoon are long thought to be the best way to eat ones food – helping the hands to stay clean, food to not come into contact with dirt, and helping one to avoid getting overly messy at the dinner table. But when they are no washed correctly the nooks and crannies in the cutlery is a perfect place for bacteria to breed.
