about Wheel of Fortune
why can't the players spin the wheel and avoid hitting a bankrupt on purpose.
with only two bankrupt positions on the wheel it doesn't seem it whould be very hard to avoid these positions.

I can only think of 3 reasons:
1) The players can't really predict how much force they put to spin the wheel. As you know, the rotation distance is proportional to the force applied to it. It will become more difficult if the player is in panic mode, they tend to put more/less force than they should/could which eventually leads to hitting the bankrupt panel. The key to avoid this situation: Practice, practice and practice!
2) The inertia and the frictional force involved is too unpredictable. According to Newton's law of motion (first law), "A body (in this case, referring to the wheel) persists in a state of uniform motion (referring to the rotational movement of the wheel) unless acted upon by an external force (in this case, this is referring to the frictional force)". When the player cannot predict how many Newton did he/she put to spin the wheel, it would be difficult to predict the speed of the wheel's rotation. By the time he already spin the wheel (let's just assume this player happen to have the ability to meter the speed of the rotation just by seeing it moves), it will be too late for him/her to do anything because only one push is allowed until the wheel stop. Unfortunately, the frictional forces from the pointer and the air acted against the player's will just right to make it stop hitting the bankrupt panel, too bad. Anyway, the key to avoid this situation would still be: Practice, practice and practice (try spinning the wheel a few times before the games start when you have a chance)!
3) Law of attraction says that if you think of negative thoughts, it will eventually get to you. For example in this case, if the player (or the audience of the show, which includes you and me) thinks of something like this, "Please don hit the bankrupt panel!", it will hit the bankrupt panel. So, the key to avoid this situation is: think of something like this, "Please hit the $200 panel". As simple as that.
Unless you think there's a magnet under the wheel, the above reason might just be the answer to what you're looking for. Hope it helps and have fun!
