Why can't our fingers and toes grow back like lizards tails?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It is true that a few lizards have tails that can break off when they are attacked by predators and then grow back again.

What actually grows back to replace the original tail is actually a cartilage. A cartilage according to wisegeek.com is a type of connective tissue in the body. Cartilage serves to provide structure and support to the body's other tissues without being as hard or rigid as bone. It can also provide a cushioning effect in joints.

In comparison, Humans cannot grow back entire bones or limbs, but the human skeleton can repair itself after fractures.

Just like many animals out there has a way to defend themselves, the tail re-growth mechanism is a defense mechanism that some lizard uses to escape from harm (when a predator grabs their tail, they let go of the tail and escapes).

This might sound like a great thing, but this action reduces the lifespan of the lizard.
Humans can’t grow a bone back after amputation because it is not part of human nature.
