Why can't jet engines simply have a big screen or grill over the front to prevent birds from entering?

I know it seems logical and simple so there must be a reason why they don't have them

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The bird AND the grill would probably enter the engine if struck.

I'm no expert another possible reason may be that due to the force of the air coming into the engine a bird would still pass through the grill and still clog the engine.
