Why can't American Coke taste as good as Canadian Coke does?!

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In America, we use artificial high-fructose corn syrup as the sweetener in our Coke. Other countries, the biggest being Mexico, and including Canada, use the original recipe of REAL sugar. It was how coke was originally made, and tastes way better.
It's sad, in order to get real Coke in America, we have to import it.

Actually the fructose/corn syrup answer is the correct one. Pepsi is going to launch what they are going to label and call "Throwback" Pepsi this summer. Their formula made with cane sugar instead of fructose. I am sure if they do that with any sucess Coke will be quick to follow suit! We can only hope.

Water tastes different everywhere in the country so I doubt that plays a factor. On top of this the largest source of freshwater on the planet, the great lakes, is smack between the United States and Canada.

The answer is the sugar. To prove this you can try buying some of the kosher for passover Coke that should be in stores in the next few weeks. It doesn't use high fructose corn syrup. The reason we use hfcs so much is because it is so cheap in this country (we subsidize the cost of corn and tax the importation of sugar).

Not only is this almost certainly the correct answer, but you should be able to test it yourself. However, I don't know how widely Coca Cola will be distributing the Kosher for Passover version. It might be hard to find outside of areas with large Jewish populations.

I agree that it's the water, and the real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. I loved the taste of Fanta when I was in Bosnia in 2000. When I saw it in the States years later, I got all excited thinking it'd be just as good. It was disgusting.

There might be more involved in that case. Europeans like a fruitier taste in their fruit flavored drinks of all kinds. They may use a different flavor formula even with the same brand.
