Why are Toyota Toypets and other early Toyota cars so rarely seen in the US?
I was surprised to learn that Toyota has been exporting cars since the '50s. Pics and video below show some examples of their early cars that I think are super cute.
I love old cars, especially the "so homely it's cute" variety. I think the Toyopets are great looking autos. Would love to actually see and ride in one!
Seems like there isn't a lot of activity in the US around collecting early Toyota cars...or am I wrong? Were not many brought to this country, or did they just not survive through the years? Do you know of an active collector's community, and if so how can I get in touch?

Going on Sale in June 1958 The Toyopets were a hot item among the American people however it did not take them long to determine that the car was not necessary built for the American potholes and roads. Before they were used as taxis in Tokyo, they were designed for post WWII Japan, but they were unsuited for high speeds! Weighing in at over 3,000 lbs and powered by a mere 58 horsepower engine they were unsuited for all easy steering. In my opinion, the reason there are so few on the road is simple. They could never keep up! They probably push around 30 miles per hour, in today’s world there is no way they could get along an interstate or road. However we do see more of the 60’s Toyotas in shows and parades. Probably because of the roads issue. I have added a list of Toyopets that are at the TOYOTA MUSEUM. It was a really cool website!
