Why are there so many mudras and what does each mudra mean?
Every photo of a Buddha sculpture or picture of shiva seems to have a different mudra or meditation hand position. What do each of them mean and how does each channel different energies for meditation?

A mudra is a symbolic or ritual gesture in Hinduism and Buddhism. Most of the mudras are performed with the hands and fingers only some mudras involve the entire body. Mudra (Sanskrit) is "spiritual gesture" and energetic "seal of authenticity" employed in the iconography and spiritual practice of Indian religions and Taoism.
There are total 108 mudras used in regular Tantric rituals. Mudras are also used in Indian Classical Dance. There are over 200 mudras in bharatanatyam and over 250 in mohiniattam (both are indian dances).
