http://www.dnr.state.md.us/wildlife/wtailfs.html states that there are more deer in Maryland now than there were prior to the arrival of European settlers. The reason is that while the environment is a good fit for the native white-tailed deer, and with all the gardening people like to do around their homes, there is now more food available for deer than centuries ago, the native predators who kept the deer population in check, wolves and mountain lions, are gone. The only hunter of deer now is man, and this is not as efficient at keeping the deer herd in check as natural predators.
