Probably because the Sixers general manager and Jordan worked together before..

"Stefanski and Jordan worked together for four seasons with the New Jersey Nets — Stefanski as an assistant general manager, Jordan as an assistant coach. During that time, the Nets reached the NBA Finals twice".
