Why are the asker's ratings defaulted to three stars?
I'm embarrassed to admit it but it wasn't that long ago that I even noticed the asker's ratings and the stars. Does that mean that everyone whom I didn't rate got a 3? I'm not the most observant person but I'm sure that other Mahaloans have overlooked the stars. How much emphasis is put on the star ratings? Shouldn't it just be a choice to rate an answer or not without the default of three?
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If you never selected a different star rating, then yes, all answers that you chose were rated as a 3.
I am not sure of the "official" reason for this default. However, my educated guess would be that 3 is the middle ground. Basically, saying it is an okay answer. Less then three is saying it could be better. More then three would be saying the answer is above average. So a default of three seems fair. To rate an answer lower or higher is the decision of the asker and should be a human choice.
It took me quite some time to notice the star ratings also. You are not alone.
As far as the importance of the ratings, I have never seen them come into play. So unless it is a factor in receiving your brown or black belt, I do not see them as very important.

LOL...I wondered what happened to this question. I am sure that a lot of members don't even notice the star rating!
My personal opinion is that anything less than three stars, then you should not be voting it as best answer. I consider four stars a really good answer and five stars as above and beyond as the rating suggests.
I'm not worried about it being a factor in my receiving my brown belt, I just thought that members should be made aware of the stars. It is very easy to miss. ;-)
Thank-you for your reply! A best answer with a four star rating is on the way...
Hmmm...it seems that the stars are not available since this question went into voting but I still voted it as best!
