There are actually a few reasons why they are successful:
1. Many superhero movies are based on characters that have a strong cult following. One of the things that Hollywood looks for in comic book movies is that there will be a set base audience that will come. Iron Man, Captain America, The X-Men, Spider-Man, and Bat Man are all characters that have had a large following for many years.
2. Some superhero movies are based on characters that have gained a lot of respect, even if they do not have a large direct following anymore. The Green Hornet would fall into this category. Even though the Green Hornet might not be as well known, or as popular as the characters that I listed in the first reason, there are many comic book fans that respect the character out of the fact that he was one of the first modern comic book characters.
3. Superhero movies pull in a lot of action fans. Many of the people that see superhero movies are not comic book fans, but are interested in watching a great and flashy adnventure and action movie. This adds to the base.
4. Since being a geek is the going thing, popularity of the sub-genre of action movies drives superhero movies up even more. Even though people might think that you are a little odd if you like comic books (I deal with this a lot), they do not think that there is anything wrong with you if you see a superhero movie as it is the going thing.
5. Since superhero movies are so popular, more sponsors and investors are willing to pay extra money out for promotion. There is usually a strong correlation between advertising dollars spent, and the take at the box office.
