Some churches, Baptists for one, have a real problem with magic, witchcraft, sorcery, or anything having to do with any of those things. It is typically religious groups that are ultra-conservative that have a problem with the Harry Potter series. Many of these groups would also not allow their children to attend school dances because of the 'evil' of dancing, sexuality of dance moves, 'bad' music and lyrics, and so on.

Throughout history, there have been many groups who disagreed with various books, hence the book burning that have taken place in the United States. Groups would create a bon fire or use a burning barrel to burn classic books such as Tom Sawyer because of content contained within that the religious groups do not agree with. This is censorship at its highest form, and most people in a free country do not believe books should be burned just because some people or religious groups don't agree with what is in them, whether it be theories of Charles Darwin, sexuality, or a wizard child named Harry Potter.

The answer to this question is quite simple, to practice and preach witchcraft and occult is considered to be the abomination of God, not only in Christianity but also in several other religions too. It is true that Harry Potter is full of witchcraft and sorcery but this needs also be considered that the universal element of good vs. bad is also present in it. Sure there is the major aspect of magic here, but then it is merely fiction.

Rowling is not trying to emphasize it as a way of life. If anyone has a problem with such a fantastic work then I feel that they should also stand against writing murder mysteries and thrillers.

If a person is going to get attracted to the magical aspect and try to indulge into it, then who can proclaim with conviction that people won’t get enticed by the new and creative ways crimes are depicted in novels? It’s just about a person’s mind. We have Leopold and Loeb for instance here!

Well, Harry Potter is about witchcraft. Most people know that it does not exist in the form that is being depicted by this very talented author, but there are some groups of Christians who are extremely concerned with the molding of young minds into what they perceive to be the evil that is discussed throughout the Bible.

There is fear by parents that their children can be convinced to dabble in witchcraft and since this is professed to be bad by the Christian faith, they are unlikely to sway from this belief. There are Christian scholars who have read the books and their words are becoming the guidelines that these groups are using to guide their own decisions.

Chances are that most parents have not read the Harry Potter series and have no idea the content, nor the topics that are being expressed. After all, in Harry Potter world, there is a fight between good and evil, which is always a good story, and in the end, of course since it is a children's series, the good guy is going to win. There are Christian undertones to the story, and to the plot as well.

If Christian groups would give the Harry Potter story and characters a chance they may change their tune, but their beliefs in what the Bible teaches is interfering with the common sense that some others think needs to take hold. If you think about it, if the Bible says that they are not allowed to be involved in evil and the Harry Potter books are perceived evil by the Bible and those Christians who interpret it that way, then they would be involved in evil and would not make it to Heaven.

Somehow naive parents believe their children will want to be magical witches. Well, I wanted to fly around like Superman, but I never made it!
