Why are some Americans finding it so difficult giving up their SUV's for something more fuel efficient?

I am not entirely sure, but here is my ideas. One is family, having an SUV is ideal if you have a family as there is enough room for everyone, car seats, video games, kids stuff and of course the family dog. A small car would not do well for someone with a family, take that from someone with 7 children. If I take my family with me somewhere we end up using 3 cars and we have pretty big ones cause I have 7 children, 4 grand children and me and my husband to fit. A really big SUV would help up narrow down the amount of cars and believe it or not would actually save us on gas money.

Another reason is vanity, SUV's scream money, the Cadillac Escalade says money a whole lot better than the little compact car. Having the best is sometimes psychological to some people, because they work hard their whole life and then they want all the toys that come along with it, no matter what the cost.

And it is, after all, their money. I suspect that people who are used to freedom resent being told what they "ought" to buy.

Although not directly on the subject, can you imagine using a Chevy S-10 or Ford Ranger as a farm truck to haul machinery, feed, and in some cases livestock around your Wyoming ranch? I can't.

Its just the nature of America. We like everything to be bigger. Americans are also so used to having so much space so it is going to take a while to getting used to having less space.
