Why are so many people willing to ruin their lives with porn?

I understand about addiction, but what I don't get is why so very many people are totally hooked on porn. I know it is a billions of dollars industry and is spreading even more with the internet. I just don't understand the total draw of it, or how many people are willing to risk their relationships because of it. How can it be that important?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

Like addictions and compulsions, viewing porn feeds a need in a person's life. It is a "feel good" escape from something painful.

The person realizes that interacting with porn gives them a rush. The addiction / compulsion become a chase to re-experience that rush. Viewing porn becomes a life priority. Relationships, resources, work, and having real intimacy start being ignored, sometimes with life damaging consequences.

One theory cites that viewing porn (and its initial rush) starts to "re-wire" the pleasure centers of the brain and it become increasingly difficult to break these new brain circuits.

A) Not everyone that consumes or purchases pornography is in a relationship.

B) Not every one has the same rigid (some would say antiquated) beliefs that you do. Thus, pornography consumption is not only not a deal-breaker but not seen as a negative. In fact, sometimes it's a positive to a relationship.

C) Many medical doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists believe that pornography is actually a HEALTHY outlet. see: http://www.oprah.com/relationships/Dr-Laura-Berman-on-Watching-Porn-Video

One word: Fantasy.

Not all men have the perfect relationships, or even the perfect girl. When there is something better for a person temporarily, he/she would be tempted to try it. Just like how cigarette smoking/alcoholism works. Most porn websites feature girls that are sexy, cute and adventurous (?). Single or in a relationship, most men will fantasize about having that kind of woman, and being in the guy's place. I can't really call it an important matter or a necessity, but the access to it is very easy and it's just there, temptations will always be around the corner. Also, consider human nature. Everyone strives to be happy, and if their happiness goes like that way, there isn't that much we can do for we all have different perspectives.

The problem with your question is that you have used the wrong word. Porn is not addicting but it is habit forming. These are two separate situations. Only in a few extreme cases do people who view porn regularly have withdrawal symptoms if they lose their access to porn. Before answering this question, you should ask, "What percentage of people who view porn find that it is habit forming, and of that group, what percentage of people who view porn as a constant habit have their lives ruined by doing so?" Having your life altered by a habit does not mean having your life ruined. Many people go through life quite happily, even when that life is affected by a habit.
The main reason for viewing porn is for the purpose of masturbation, but there are many reasons for needing to use porn for this purpose. One reason is ED, and this reason is likely to become more significant in the US as our population ages.

I call myself a "swiss cheeser" for good reason: I poke holes in arguments (the position one takes; not fights) Let's take yours, in your own words:

"I don't get is why so very many people are totally hooked on porn"
++The same could be said about Mahalo.com. I've answered questions well into 4:00 or 5:00 a.m.

" I know it is a billions of dollars industry and is spreading even more with the internet."
++If people can find a way to make money, they will. Not all of the porn sites are actually run by people in porn; I'd be surprised if even 5% of them were. More like entrepreneurs who have taken what's available on the market and are just re-selling it.But understand it or not, it's a simple supply-and-demand thing, and a question of giving the customer what they want--and getting YOUR store's product to someone Whatever that product is. The most brilliant example, and I'm not shilling for them, just using them as an illustration, is whitehouse.com. SOMEONE (unfortunately not me) got smart when the web was building up and jumped on that domain. Barack Obama: whitehouse.GOV. Porn: whitehouse.COM.

" I just don't understand the total draw of it"
++You don't have to understand the draw of it. It seems likely that for you there is no draw.

++But it exists for some, and one person's s trash is another person's treasure.

"or how many people are willing to risk their relationships because of it.
++Not everyone who watches porn is throwing their life away. On those who are, see below.

" How can it be that important?"
++You said that you understand addiction. I worked for a Drug & Alcohol Education program at a major state university. Addiction is addiction is addiction. It's very easy to explain how it can be so important. Take out "porn" and substitute it with any of the following: coke, crack, heroin, meth, ecstasy, weed, acid, OTC painkillers, prescription painkillers, huffing, whip-its, alcohol, cigarettes...

++It doesn't have to be porn or a chemical, per se: Addiction is defined as: "The state of being addicted; devotion; inclination; A habit or practice that damages, jeopardizes or shortens one's life but when ceased causes trauma; A pathological relationship to mood altering experience that has life damaging consequences"

++It could also be food or shopping. I've seen examples of both.

It's mildly addicting, filmed to be seductive, cheap and easily accessible. Avoiding it, on the other hand requires accountability, alternative coping mechanisms, and realization that porn has negative effects. In our society there are ads of cable TV showing a happy older couple enjoying porn together as if it has a positive effect on their relationship, this kind of marketing definitely makes it a tough sell to convince consumers porn is damaging. So it's less like people feel like porn is "important" and more like they misjudge it's insidious danger to authentic intimacy.

Most I have talked to regarding this, either believe they have a good enough handle on it that they do not interfere ... others are in pure denial of the kind of damage it causes.. and yet others don't care if their partners look all they want as long as they do not touch others... But there are always more risks that meet the eyes with this kind of thing, and it really can change how a person thinks and approaches things..I have witnessed many decent people go through a personality change ever viewing this sort of thing becomes habit.. especially when it grows into a complusion..most like others do not realize how dangerous it can be in the long run..

It is simple it fills some kind of void in their lives. I understand your question as ruin so that would be because people think they will not get caught doing something wrong. It's the criminal mentality of not getting caught. The people who have their lives ruined are the ones who have child porn or go after kids. And they don't go for it because they know they'll get caught. It is where their sexuality is and I don't think anyone knows why adults go after children completely.

Either one of the following: Porn mimics intimacies that are the viewer's fantasy...often providing the only sense of intimacy the viewer has available. OR The viewer is not able share intimacy or sexual activity with his mate (at least not to the extent he (or she) desires.

Falling towards bad and getting out from good is a human nature. Many people are walking ,talking, eating, singing, working, on their autopilot.SO,are seeing porn on their autopilot.

But you can also think the other way round.

Most people dont know that watching porn may ruin their live.................Yeah,i am right.Ask a porn addicted person that why do they watch porn?they will say that it make them feel good. But if you tell them the thousands of negative aspects of watching a porn video then they will hopefully restrain their self from it.

Actually I believe this is human nature. The magical attraction between people of the opposite sex is key to reproduction and continuation of its kind. God is wise prescribe stimulation when we see attractive people of the opposite sex so that no one will get tired of having sex one day, which would cause the termination of its kind. This applies to animals and many other organisms as well.

Why do so many people find the nude human form a problem? Why do so many people deny their natural sexual urges? Why do so many people try so hard to convince themselves that looking at an image of a naked person does not turn them on? Why do so many people feel such guilt surrounding a completely natural biological process called sex? This is 2010, not the time of puritans coming over on the Mayflower. I have yet to meet anyone whose relationship was ruined by looking at nude photos/videos. The human body is beautiful and amazing in all its variations. Sexuality is a beautiful gift that humans have. I think the norm is to actually feel arousal when viewing beautiful naked people, if you do not feel aroused at the sight of the human body, perhaps the question should be turned on yourself....why do you not get turned-on by sexual imagery, perhaps years of guilt about your own sexual nature? If you were raised in a conservative family you were most likely taught that nudity is bad. Believe it or not some families try to teach their children that their bodies are beautiful and sacred and amazing and everything about the way you feel when looking at a naked body is totally and completely normal. what is not normal is projecting your own issues with sex on other people. I suggest you spend some time exploring the world of the unclothed human form, both male and female.

With a little practice you can slowly learn to appreciate the vast variety the human body has to offer...please, please, please.... what the world needs now is not more judgmental people who teach our children to be so repressed that when they are finally in a sexual relationship they do not know how to act and they feel extreme guilt as if there is something wrong with them because they are turned on, the world needs people who embrace the different interests of each other, I suggest you start with some of the more classy fine art nude photography such as the art photos on the site below. We are animals, sexual desire is not an addiction it is in the deepest levels of our DNA...that insatiable desire is the only thing that has allowed our species or any other on the planet to still exist today.

There is absolutely nothing pornographic about the nude form, like when it is used in art. It's only the depiction of sex acts that is considered porn.

Sometimes people really can't help it. To them being "addicted" to porn is pretty much the same as someone who is addicted to some drug.
