Why are most #2 pencils yellow?

The Chinese started painting pencils yellow in the 1800's. They wanted to let everyone know that the pencils contained Chinese graphite. They painted them yellow because, in China, "the color yellow is associated with royalty and respect." American manufactures soon followed suite and still do today.
