Why are Saskatchewan Roughriders fans called melon heads? Where did the watermelon on the head come from?
Is it only because it is GREEN???

They are probably called melon heads because of their tendency to wear melons on their heads. This in turn probably is indeed because those melons are green, like the team colors.
Adding further interest however, is that it turns out that Saskatchewan has its own variety of watermelon, thought to have been brought over by Russian immigrants.
"Cream of Saskatchewan: This variety consists of small round fruits, around 25 cm (10 inches) in diameter. It has a quite thin, light green with dark green striped rind, with sweet white flesh and black seeds. It can grow well in cool climates. These melons take 80–85 days from planting to harvest."
So its not quite the same as the big ones we have down south. In fact, it seems to be just right for hollowing out and using for a helmet.
