Why after somebody sneezes do people sometimes say "Gesundheit"? What does this mean, what is the origin?

You know, I always thought this was a totally German term, from Germany, coined in Germany. I looked it up just now. It is an Americanism coined in the early 1900s by the Yiddish and Pennsylvania Dutch, apparently. It means in german, "good health to you". Kind of like god bless you.
I'm not sure why, but this is cute. there's a clown club called the gesundheit institute.
