Let me tell you a little about different kinds of whiskey. You basically have these kinds:
Rye whiskey like Seagrams VO
Scotch like Johnnie Walker
Bourbon like Jim Beam
Jack Daniels is what we call Sour Mash Tennessee Whiskey and people will debate the validity of calling it Bourbon. Bourbon gets its name from the fact that it origin is Bourbon County, Tennessee. Anyone who drinks Jack AND regular Bourbon will know that it IS bourbon.
There is nothing special about it other than the marketing. It has been made very popular.
Rye whiskey is the smoothest and easiest to drink for new whiskey drinkers, whereas Bourbon and Scotch are acquired tastes.
The difference between Bourbon and Scotch is simple and clearly explains the difference in flavors.
Bourbon is poured over a charcoal screen into a barrel for aging which scotch is poured directly into a charred barrel. The result is that scotch has a distinct smokey flavor and is generally aged longer to round out the flavor and attain smoothness.
